罗疃李氏八极拳源自河北省孟村县罗疃村的李大忠所传,是一门独具特色的武术。李大忠是此门武艺的第三代传人,其师承关系可追溯至吴钟,一位在中国古代武术史上具有重要地位的人物。
Wu Chong, the founder of Baguaquan, had two prominent disciples: Ding Xiaowu and Wu Yong. Li Dachun initially learned from Ding Xiaowu, but after being recognized by Wu Yong for his exceptional talent and character, he was accepted as a student by both masters. As a result of his outstanding abilities and diligent practice, Li Dachun received the true transmission from his teachers.
Li Dachun further integrated his family's ancestral skills into Baguaquan, making it distinct with its emphasis on "grabbing and holding," "harmony of hardness and softness," "mixing the original to achieve relaxation," "strict techniques with diverse variations." This style has since influenced numerous other schools of thought in Baguaquan.
Baguaquan consists of two main forms: one is called Eight Trigrams Structure (Ba Gua Zhang), while the other is referred to as Eight Trigrams Fist (Ba Gua Quan). The former is also known as Little Structure or Small Frame due to its brevity and compactness. It serves as an entry-level form for learning Baguaquan but should not be underestimated due to its simplicity. Many experts have spent years mastering this foundation before achieving prominence.
On the other hand, Big Frame or Great Structure refers to the second form mentioned above—Eight Trigrams Fist—and is considered the main form of Baguaquan by some practitioners. Master Wang emphasizes that these terms are misleading because they imply that there are no primary forms within Baguaquan itself.
Several points need clarification:
For general guidelines on practicing Baguaquan refer to our previous article《Ro Gut Li Family's Ba Gua Zhang Practice》published in《Wu Hun》magazine in 2010.
To facilitate understanding of movements during performance assume a setting where east-west directions define stage left-right orientation facing south at west side edge area.
When describing movement directions use terms such as northeast-southwest-northwest-southeast; however, these angles deviate slightly from actual positions due to technical considerations.
The primary route followed during performance resembles a straight line featuring snowflake patterns at two points; exact execution may vary slightly while maintaining clear indications provided through diagrams drawn by predecessors.
