Mexican team's incredible journey: What lies ahead?

November 25-26, the North American Women's Sevens Rugby Championship and the qualifying tournament for the 2018 Women's Rugby World Cup in Mexico City saw Mexico host a historic event. The Mexican team, playing on home soil, emerged victorious and secured their first-ever spot at the Women's Rugby World Cup.

The championship featured seven teams from across North America, including Jamaica, Guyana, French Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Dominica Republics. The competition was a single round-robin format where each team played every other opponent once. This meant that every match held immense importance as each victory or defeat would significantly impact the final standings.

Mexico put up an impressive performance with five wins and one loss to their name. Their only setback came against French Guiana but even this could not diminish their achievements as they finished second with an unbeaten record of four victories over three of their opponents.

French Guiana finished third alongside Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago with all three teams sharing an equal points tally of fourteen points. However it was Mexico who claimed second place due to a superior goal difference margin.

This top-three finish not only secured Mexico’s place in history books by earning them qualification for the next year’s Central American Games women’s rugby sevens event but also gave them invaluable experience which will undoubtedly aid them in future competitions.
